Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar are two Jyotirlingas, or major pilgrimage sites, associated with Lord Shiva in Madhya Pradesh, India. Mahakaleshwar is located in Ujjain, while Omkareshwar is located in Khandwa, about 140 km south of Mahakaleshwar.
Mahakaleshwar is situated on the side of the Shipra river and is believed to house a swayambhu (self-manifested) Shiva Lingam. The idol is dakshinamurti (south-facing), and it is also a Shakti-Peeth (dedicated to Goddess Shakti) where the upper lip of the goddess fell.
